"Here we have what is perhaps the most pressing reason why same-sex marriage should be fought, and fought vigorously. It is a reason that neither the proponents nor the opponents of same-sex marriage have properly debated or thought through. In attacking “heterosexual monogamy,” same-sex marriage does away with the very institution—the only institution we have—that exists precisely in order to support the natural family and to affirm its independence from the state. In doing so, it effectively makes every citizen a ward of the state, by turning his or her most fundamental human connections into legal constructs at the state’s gift and disposal."

If you want to become more effective in defending marriage, please read this article in its entirety. It really gets to the nitty-gritty points of debate--the why's and where fore's.
This is gibberish...marriage is a civil institution for everyone and religious for some. If you wish to be considered a "ward of the state" so be it. The rest of us will take the civil rights and responsibilities of civil marriage and move on.
ReplyDeleteI guess you didn't really capture the full meaning of the article. A shame, because you are wrong in your judgement. Only marriage between a man and a woman attaches a child to both his/her parents, in a manner that the govt. has no need to step to establish legal parentage. Once marriage is divorced from procreation (the end result of SSM), parentage becomes a construct of the state, with the state in charge of determining the legal bonds between parents and children. SSM's are non-fertle unions, so any children involved come of a third-party involvement, and that creates legal issues that man/woman marriages don't face with their own natural children, which is the universal method children come into the world--via a man and a woman.
